Online Psychiatric Evaluation in New Jersey and Texas

Diamond Valley Behavioral offers online psychiatric evaluations for adults in New Jersey and Texas. You meet with a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner via secure video from home or work, as long as you are in New Jersey or Texas during your visit. Your provider reviews your symptoms and history, explains what they find, and outlines your options, which may include medication management or a referral for therapy.

What Is an Online Psychiatric Evaluation?

An online psychiatric evaluation is a structured, in-depth conversation between you and a licensed provider, conducted through a secure video visit instead of an in-person office appointment. During this psychiatrist mental health evaluation, your provider will ask about your current symptoms, your personal and family mental health history, your daily functioning, and what you are hoping to get out of care.

One thing worth clearing up early: an evaluation does not automatically mean you will walk away with a prescription. Sometimes medication is the right next step. Other times, your provider might recommend therapy, lifestyle changes, further monitoring, or a combination of approaches. The goal of your evaluation is clarity first, treatment plan second.

Research on telehealth psychiatry consistently shows that online evaluations are just as effective as in-person visits for diagnosing and treating most mental health conditions. Your provider can still observe your appearance, speech, and mood through video the same way they would across a desk, and every session is conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform to protect your privacy. The only thing we ask on your end is a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable speaking openly.

Who Should Consider an Adult Psychiatric Evaluation?

You do not need a crisis to justify booking an evaluation. Many of our adult patients come to us because:

Symptoms like anxiety, low mood, or trouble focusing have lasted for weeks and are not improving on their own

A previous diagnosis does not feel quite right, or symptoms have changed over time

Medication is being considered and a professional opinion is needed first

A major life change, whether stressful or positive, has affected mental or emotional wellbeing

If any of this sounds familiar, an evaluation is simply a conversation designed to give you real answers.

When emergency care is a better fit: telehealth works well for most people, but it is not the right setting for every situation. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, having thoughts of harming yourself or others, or dealing with severe symptoms that need immediate attention, please call 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), go to your nearest emergency room, or call 911. Our team is always glad to help you figure out the right level of care if you are unsure where to start.

How Our Online Psychiatric Evaluation Process Works

Unlike a lot of practices that describe their process in vague terms, here is exactly what happens when you book with Diamond Valley Behavioral.

Schedule Your Appointment

Book online through our Tebra or Zocdoc scheduling pages, or call us directly at 609-496-0285. We're open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 8:00pm.

Pre-Appointment Screening Call

Within 24 hours of booking, our team will reach out to complete a short screening and confirm your identity, so your actual evaluation time is spent entirely on you, not paperwork logistics.

Complete Your Intake Forms

You will fill out your health history and background information ahead of time, so your provider walks into your appointment already prepared.

Your Initial Evaluation

Your evaluation itself runs about one hour. This is where the real conversation happens, and where your provider begins building a treatment plan that actually fits your life.

What Happens During Your Evaluation?

During your one-hour session, your provider will walk through your symptoms, their duration and severity, how they are affecting your day-to-day life, your medical and psychiatric history, and any relevant family history. You may also complete standardized screening tools that help your provider understand your symptoms more precisely.

This is not a checklist exercise. It is a real conversation, and you are encouraged to ask questions along the way.

What Happens After Your Evaluation?

Once your evaluation is complete, your provider will walk you through a personalized treatment plan. Depending on what fits your situation, this might include:

check-mark.png

Ongoing medication management, with follow-up visits typically running about 20 minutes

check-mark.png

Supportive talk therapy during your visits, with a referral to a licensed therapist if more in-depth, ongoing therapy is the better fit

check-mark.png

A recommendation for further monitoring before any treatment decisions are made

A note on ADHD and stimulant medication: if your evaluation points toward ADHD, your provider will talk with you about whether a stimulant is appropriate. Prescribing rules for controlled medications vary by state and can change, so we will explain exactly what applies to your care.
